Hojicha is a Japanese green tea that is crafted by roasting green tea at high temperatures and then aging it for several years. To produce this well balanced and unique Japanese tea, sencha green is carefully roasted. After roasting the tea, it is aged in temperature controlled facilities for one to two years to mellow the flavor of the tea leaf. The roasting and aging results in a naturally low caffeine green tea that has minimal green tea bitterness, little to no astringency, and a smooth rich taste.
Our premium hojicha is produced from roasting sencha, a premium Japanese green tea, rather than roasting lower quality green tea such as bancha. Roasting a high quality sencha results in a premium taste with less stems and twigs in the finished product. You will find lower grade hojicha on the tea market, which is made with bancha as the base green tea, but we carry only the premium grade hojicha in our tea collection.
